Science and Contemplative Practice -- Emerging Outcomes of Meditation Research Speaker: Diego Hangartner (Chief Operations Officer and Director of MLI International) Date: October 4, 2011 (Tue) Time: 7pm - 9pm Venue: Room 726, 7/F KnowlesBuilding, HKU *************************** Abstract: Over the last decade, science has been interested in researching the effects of meditation on the brain and cognitive functions. More and more evidence is emerging that points towards a fundamental difference in the brains of novice meditators and expert meditators. But what is different? Is this difference trainable or is it just a genetic predisposition? And is there a relationship to wellbeing and happiness? Diego Hangartner will be talking about the Mind and Life dialogues between western scientists, coming from the different fields of Neuroscience, Neuroplasticity, Psychology, Philosophy, Epistemology and Biology, and Tibetan Buddhists, led by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Bio of speaker: Diego Hangartner, Pharm.D., M.A., is the current COO of Mind and Life and the Head of Mind and Life International. After studying pharmacology at the ETHZurich, Diego's interest in understanding the mind and consciousness led him to Dharamsala, India, where he studied for 7 years at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. Since returning to Europe, he has taught widely, interpreted Tibetan into many languages, and organized the Dalai Lama's visits to Switzerland (2005) and Germany (2007).
